This film was inspired by the real life case of a 'Washington Post' journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for a fabricated story and as such was stripped of the award.

According to Frank DiGiaomo, Paul Newman stated that this picture was a "direct attack on the 'New York Post' .
Actor Paul Newman once said of this film, himself and the media: "I would say that 90% of what people read about me in the newspapers is untrue. Ninety percent is garbage. [Reporters] are expected to come up with something sensational every night of the week to keep their readers' noses buried in the pages, and, well, you tell me. If nothing's happening, what do you do? Well, in their case, they make it up."
Paul Newman and director Sydney Pollack were both gourmet chefs and had a running culinary competition throughout filming with Sally Field as the judge. Though a good sport at first, Sally grew tired of eating gourmet night after night, and began begging off her judging duties in favor of hamburgers and omelettes at local diners.
The attack by Michael Gallagher on Megan Carter resulted in actress Sally Field receiving minor injuries. On the DVD documentary "The Story Behind ABSENCE OF MALICE", Field declares that her neck pain was "beyond sore" and likened it to "whiplash". Field did not let actor Paul Newman know of her hurt and continued working on the movie.
Director Sydney Pollack in the DVD doc "The Story Behind ABSENCE OF MALICE" said that the entire movie was filmed on location outside of the studio except for one shot. А re-shoot, for a line of dialogue where Michael Gallagher (Paul Newman) says to Megan Carter (Sally Field) at the end of the movie that he might see her later. This was to fulfill a suggestion by Frank Price, the then studio head of Columbia Pictures, that there needs to be, in the tradition of Hollywood romance, at least a suggestion to audiences and particularly women, that the two leads may be unified romantically in the future. Earlier, test audiences had given negative preview cards to the fact that the lead characters in this picture did not end up together at the film's end.
At one point in the film, Eddie comments that it has been "25 years" since he last played. In real life, it had been 25 years (1961 - 1986) since The Hustler, where Newman had first played Fast Eddie.

Paul Newman says the best advice director Martin Scorsese gave him, especially in humorous scenes, was: "Try NOT to be funny."
An earlier screenplay was written by Walter Tevis, author of the novels "The Hustler" and "The Color of Money". But Martin Scorsese was not interested in doing a literal sequel to The Hustler and worked out a new story with Newman and Richard Price.
Tom Cruise did his own trick shots for the film, except for one in which he had to jump two balls to sink another. Scorsese said he could have let Cruise learn the shot, but it would have taken two extra days of practice, holding up production and costing thousands of dollars. The shot was instead performed by professional player Michael Sigel.
When Paul Newman won the Best Actor Oscar for this picture, he and wife Joanne Woodward became the first married couple to win his and hers Oscars since Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier. Newman's win also came after he had already received an Honorary Oscar Statuette the previous year. The win was widely considered based on sentimentality and guilt that one of Hollywood's leading male actors had never won.
When The Hustler first came out, there was an increase in the sales of pool tables around 1961, the film apparently causing a popularizing of the pastimes of pool playing and billiards. When this sequel was first released, a similar phenomenon occurred, trade paper 'Variety' reporting, "... sales of pool tables and billiards-related supplies have leaped dramatically since the October release of The Color of Money."
Martin Scorsese: In the Atlantic City casino, the man walking a dog on a leash. The dog is Scorsese's dog Zoe. Zoe is credited in the closing credits as "Dog Walkby."
Paul Newman had never held a pool cue before he landed the role of Fast Eddie Felson. He took out the dining room table from his home and installed a pool table so he could spend every waking hour practicing and polishing up his skills. All the pool shots in the movie are performed by the actors themselves (Paul Newman and Jackie Gleason) except one.
When first approached to play the role of Fast Eddie Felsen, Paul Newman couldn't accept it because he was scheduled to begin filming Two for the Seesaw with Elizabeth Taylor. When Taylor was held up with the filming of Cleopatra, "Seesaw" was postponed and Paul was able to do this film.
While at the Kentucky Derby, the race announcer lists some of the horses racing. One of the horses named is "Stroke of Luck". "Stroke of Luck" was one of the titles considered for the film as a result of studio fears that the title "The Hustler" would create negative connotations with prostitution.
Boxer Jake LaMotta appears as as one of the many bartenders in the film. His one line is "Check," and he says it three times.
The film crew built a dining area that was so realistic that people showed up expecting to have their orders taken.
Rossen hired real street thugs and enrolled them in the Screen Actors Guild so that they could be used as extras.
Jackie Gleason was in reality a very good pool player and did many of his own shots in the film.
According to editor Dede Allen, an entire scene from this film was omitted after much deliberation between Allen and her director Robert Rossen. Even though both agreed that the scene, an impassioned speech by Paul Newman in the pool room, was possibly the best part of his entire performance, they had to throw it out because "...it didn't move the story." Newman, though Oscar-nominated, later claimed that the deleted scene most likely cost him the Academy Award.
Adapted from a Broadway play by Tennessee Williams that opened on Mar. 10, 1959 at the Martin Beck Theatre and ran for 375 performances. Elia Kazan directed, and Paul Newman, Geraldine Page, Madeleine Sherwood and Rip Torn recreated their roles from the play.
In the original play, Chance does not end up with Heavenly. He is beaten and castrated (offstage) by Boss Finley's thugs. The ending was changed for the movie because the original ending would never have been allowed by the 1960's censors.
Marlon Brando's Pennebaker Films co-produced, and Paul Newman was cast after Brando lost interest in the film. Marilyn Monroe was also considered for the Woodward role before she too lost interest.
This film marks Joanne Woodward and Paul Newman's first cinematic collaboration.
Director Martin Ritt was forever known after this movie as the man who tamed Orson Welles. During filming Ritt drove Welles into the middle of a swamp, kicked him out of the car and forced him to find his own way back.
Joanne Woodward became pregnant during production only to miscarry on her and 'Paul Newman' (I)'s honeymoon, less than a month before the world premiere.
'Butch Cassidy' (Robert Leroy Parker) was so nick-named because he once worked in a butcher's shop. 'The Sundance Kid' (Harry Alonzo Longabaugh) was nick-named this because he once was arrested in the Wyoming town of Sundance. During filming Paul Newman had an affair with journalist Nancy Bacon, which caused him to separate from his wife Joanne Woodward for a time.
Lula Parker Betenson, sister of the real Butch Cassidy, often visited the set, and her presence was welcome to the cast and crew. During lulls in shooting she would tell stories about her famous brother's escapades, and was amazed at how accurately the sсript and Paul Newman portrayed him. Before the film was released, the studio found out about her visits and tried to convince her to endorse the movie in a series of ads to be shown in theatres across the country. She said that she would, but only if she saw the film first and truly stood behind it. The studio refused, saying that allowing her to see the film before its release could harm its reputation. Finally, at Robert Redford's suggestion, she agreed to do the endorsements - for a small "fee."
Katharine Ross enjoyed shooting the silent, bicycle riding sequence best, because it was handled by the film crew's second unit rather than the director. She said, "Any day away from George Roy Hill was a good one." (This was after she had been scolded and banned from the set for operating a camera.)
Other actors that were under consideration for the role of Sundance were Steve McQueen and Warren Beatty. McQueen withdrew due to billing disagreements, and Beatty declined as he found the film too similar to Бонни и Клайд.
Marlon Brando was seriously considered to team with Paul Newman for one of the roles.
Dustin Hoffman was considered for the role of Butch Cassidy.
Jack Lemmon turned down the role of Sundance because of a scheduling conflict with The Odd Couple.
Winona Ryder was the studio's first choice to play the First Lady.
Morgan Freeman was filming the crisis room scenes in Louisiana at the height of his Internet death hoax. He often began each day of filming by serenading the extras with old jazz songs and endeared himself to the unsuspecting crew with pranks.
Director Antoine Fuqua said in an interview that he did not want the film's villains to be from the Middle East, a choice he felt had been covered to the point of saturation in other films, and that North Korea was interesting to him because it was a country that was completely closed off to the outside world and therefore projected a sense of no one really knowing what it wanted or was capable of doing.
Tom Hardy and Michael Fassbender were considered for the role of Quaid.
Kate Bosworth and Diane Kruger were considered for the role of Lori, and Eva Green, Rosario Dawson and Paula Patton were considered for the role of Melina. Eva Mendes was considered for both roles.
The one shot fight scene was performed by Colin Farrell himself and was shot 22 times before Farrell did it perfectly.
Actor Colin Farrell actually spent a night on the set because he wanted "to see what it would be like to wake up in the future".
