Despite Mike Leigh's reputation, the film budget was so tight that during the penultimate week, they ran out of money, so Leigh and the cast rehearsed for a further week before carrying on.
Mike Leigh asked the actors to hum in the movie. Because they couldn't afford to buy rights to songs, the actors had to hum something generic.
The film was submitted for the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, but as it was denied, Imelda Staunton thought that the film would eventually be released in the UK and have little impact.
However, it was then a big success at the Venice Film Festival, and eventually was nominated for several Academy Awards.
